driving

Driving
When do we have the right to receive our independence? It is illogical for people to receive their license at the age of eighteen years old. I received my license at the age of sixteen years old, and when I received it, I was finally able to hold a grip of independence in my left hand. Learning how to drive takes time, first you must be taught by your mother or father how to drive, and then you have to attend classes that explain the rules of driving, and the proper etiquette of the road. Next after you have to attend driving classes, you have to take the written exam which consists of fifty questions. The exam last for at least an hour and a half, after you have passed your written your exam, you will receive a half sheet of paper which is called at permit; you must keep this permit for six months at least. After you have had your license for six months, then you can take the behind the wheel test. So as you can see receiving your license is a long process.
Why put more pressure on my senior year than I already have. Senior year consist of getting ready for prom, after prom, grad night, senior breakfast, yearbook purchases, senior photos, SAT’s, ACT’s, SAT subject test, maintaining a high grade point average, college tours, and picking the right college. Senior year can be extremely stressful and extremely expensive, especially when you have to worry about taking a written exam for driving, and a behind the wheel test.
Achieving your ability to drive at the age of eighteen years old, is difficult, and stressful. Who wants to ask his or her parents for a ride at the age of seventeen years old, it is actually somewhat embarrassing. It is unfair for teenager to have to ask their mommies and daddies if they would be so kind and drop them off at the mall, with their date, or drop them off at the movie theatre. Growing up is about making mistakes; however society does not see it like this. I understand that having a license is extremely important, and if  given to the wrong person somewhat dangerous. If a person who has not had the proper training, is out on the road, he or she is not only a danger to himself or herself but a danger to others. I believe that people who drive at an early age get a better understanding of what independence truly means. Having independence at an early age such as sixteen years old teaches you more than responsibility, but it gives you a sense of maturity. Also receiving your license at the age of sixteen years old, will motivate young people to get a job, because owning a license will promote people to want to buy a car (hence the job) and if they have the car already they will still be motivated to get a job, because in order to drive you need gas, and gas cost money.

getting to know your grandparents

To preserve the family history several questions have to be asked. Questions to ask the oldest member of your family, such as a grandfather, grandmother, great grandfather, or great grandmother. You could ask them things like, who is the oldest member of the family they remember, what type of person were they when they were younger, what type of occupation did they have when they were younger, and what are some of their greatest accomplishments. Its very important to connect with your elderly relatives because their day are limited and you would hate to have to watch them go, without knowing anything about them, you would be very regretful. Also when you get to know your grandparents (or whoever you are connecting with) you are bonding with them, and when you understand where you have came from, you begin to self reflect about the characteristics you posses. You could also ask them how many kids they have or had, what dreams did they have when they were younger, were they good or bad when they were younger, and were they ever married before if so when? I believe that you could also ask general question (just to get to know them more) like what is their favorite color, what is their favorite sport, if they could travel anywhere, where would they go, what do they picture paradise looking like, what is their favorite food, when is their birthday (if you did not already know that), do they like music, what type of music do they listen to, and do they like the things that play on the radio now?

my fav video

My favorite music video is Kanye west’s new music video/ mini movie clip “Runaway”. I like this music video because its really good and it has beautiful images and vivid colors. The music video has much more meaning behind all the symbolism than viewers think. When I first seen this music video I couldn’t believe it was thirty minutes long, and I figured I would watch maybe half of it (if that much). However when I started watching it my whole entire mindset changed. I was captured by the beautiful colors most rapper and singers create music videos that are often times degrading to women, but Kanye has not created your stereotypical music video he has created art. The video is long, but it features a mixture and preview of all o the songs that are offered on his new album “My Twisted Dark Fantasy”. Kanye West is a well-known artist and has proven that he is well known for a reason. The music video features a sphinx, which is a make believe spiritual animal (somewhat of a bird) that symbolized, rebirth, and new life. Throughout the movie Kanye West is searching for this sphinx, and when he finds the sphinx (the sphinx is in a female body) he captures her and keeps he to himself, and she eventually burns(which sphinx are known for). You have to pay attention to several things in his music video like the colors, and the lyrics that are following the several video clips.

friends

Making a new friend is somewhat easy. The first thing I do when  I want  to make a new friend is make eye contact, if he or she does not come my way first I make the move. I go up to him or her and introduce myself and ask them what his or her name is.  I initiate the conversation with simple questions only seeking to understand who they are better and where they come from. I ask simple questions such as, what is  your favorite sport, when were  you born, what sign are you, what is your favorite color, what is your favorite food, what school do you go to? Also when meeting a new friend you have to carry a positive attitude and be friendly, no one wants to befriend someone who is rude, and inconsiderate of their feelings (those type of friendships will not last). When I get to know the person better I ask question like “what is your most embarrassing moment.
I love making new friends because I get to expose myself to various backgrounds, and actually have the potential to have made a lifelong friend. It is always fascinating how a friendship can evolve into a lifelong friendship, and best friends. I have made several friends with people that I felt that I would never be friends with but now I am best friends with them. Making friends is a good thing, you allow yourself to become somewhat of a social butterfly when you make friends and if you are a shy person making a new friend will bring you out of your shell.

piercings

Getting a piercing is a new teenage fad. However I believe it has always been a teenage fad, there are numerous things to get pierced beside your ears. Getting a piercing to me is a way to express yourself although parental may find it rebellious and not advised to get one.  I believe that the most expressive piercing are the naval piercing, nose piercings, upper ear piercings, and lip piercing. I for once received a naval piercing just for the fact that I found it pretty, and it was a way to express myself. I believe that getting theses exotic piercing became popular because it is a way that teenager can express themselves and also piercings are a form of body art.
Often times teenage fads go out of style, and come and go although this is true body piercings have always been popular amongst the teenage for a really long time and they have always been seen as rebellious in the parental eye. I believe that  getting a piercing should no t be perceived as rebellious s act against parents or authorities. Teenagers should only get piercings if they want to express themselves and find the piercing cute. I feel that it is wrong when teenagers get piercings simply because their friends are getting it, or it is popular amongst a certain group of people. It is hard to keep up with a piercing also you have to take care of it, clean it daily, and keep a ring in it so it doesn’t close, and also piercing can be painful.

college

It is hard to pick the right college or even the college I truly want to attend. I am a senior now in high school and the college search has been long and hard. I believe the correct way to approach the college search is to begin when you are at least a junior in high school. First you must understand and comprehend what you want to do and life, and what you truly have a passion for. I believe that people who pick careers that they feel are only financially correct, will not have a happy life. if you follow your passion then with patience, time, and experience it will ultimately lead you into financial stability and bliss. Next you have to honestly ask yourself, do I want to go out of state? I for one have the deepest desire to attend an out of state school; I want something new and challenging, and it is for this reason that I want to attend an out of state school. These few steps will help you narrow down a few colleges. Lastly you must figure out the cost of tuition and take in consideration the miscellaneous you will need. If money is an issue for you, you must go after scholarships, grants, and if necessary loans. I believe that loans are bad, however how far will you go to attend your dream school is the question one must ask him or herself. I may or may not take out loans but I will try my hardest first to achieve loans and grants

my parents

I appreciate my parents because they provide me with the things I need the most. My parents buy my clothes, food, water, and shoes. I appreciate my mom because she gave birth to me. I appreciate my parents because when my younger brother and I argue my parents are always there to separate us from our fight and they help us figure out who was right and who was wrong. I believe my parents are always trying to help me do my best and achieve the goals I want to achieve. Although I may argue with my mom and my dad at the end of the day I still love them and they still love me. Arguing with my parents is all apart of growing up my parents believe they are right all the time although they are not and I believe that I am right most of the time and sometimes I am not. When my parents argue with me and tell me that I am wrong I am upset for a second but within days I realize they were trying to show me the right answers. If I were to just take every word my mother or father told me then I wouldn’t be the independent thinker that I am today I would just take everyone’s input and neglect my own opinion. Arguing with my parents has not only taught me to be independent but to also self reflect and have my own opinions, it has taught me to be a leader, my parents have taught me to be a leader.

veggies

I despise asparagus. I believe asparagus is so nasty especially when it is cooked too much. Like the asparagus is too soft and it taste really nasty I hate that it is so bitter and it almost has no taste whatsoever. Asparagus indeed is good for you, but although it is good for you this does not mean I am going to eat it. When my mother or my father cooks asparagus I dread even seeing the thick green sticks on my smooth plate, it always throws off the beauty of the food layout. Asparagus has no reason to taste so nasty. When I bite into a soft, overcooked piece of asparagus I regret that bite, the juice leaks into my mouth and the softness of the lumpy sticks brush against my white teeth. There is not much to say about a vegetable that I dislike and there is not much to write about it being that I do not like it and besides the taste and the look does have some affect but not really. I do not have much to say about this because this was a topic that needed no elaboration really, I am suppose to write at least two hundred and fifty words on why I don’t like asparagus. This is such a “wack” and bogus topic there is nothing for me to say and furthermore I am pretty much done with writing about my dislike for asparagus and my dislike for having to write about how much I do not like asparagus.

homeschool

Taking your child out of a public, private or charter school in order for you to home school them is by far the worst thing to do in terms of education, in my opinion. I believe that people need to not only have a educational skills, but also social skills. When you take a student out of public, private, or charter school, this effects their social skills. Also when you never expose the child to a public school, and you have homeschooled the child for most of his or her life, he or she is negatively going to be affected. I believe that students who have been homeschooled, most likely lack social skills, and they may not understand how to act around people beside their parents. Allowing kids to grow up around other students and learn in an environment with other students of their own age they will learn how to adapt better, because as a child you are always around your parents, and you know how to act around adults but children who are homeschooled will not understand how to act around children, therefore they will the lack what is the latest crave on every teen boy or girls mind. Homeschooled children will not understand how to joke like a kid their own age because they have not been around, nor have they grown up, or been experienced to children of their own age because they spent most of their lives cooped up in a house listening to their parents teach a lesson they could have easily learned in school.

my day

My typical day is wake up, argue with my youngest brother (or whoever woke me up) about trying to persuade him to allow me to sleep in for five more minutes. Next I take a shower, brush my teeth put lotion on, get dressed and get ready to go to school. I remind my youngest brother to feed our dogs Ace and Max. Next I usually  tell my younger brother to hurry up because I don’t want to sit in traffic all day long. By now me and my younger brother are out of the house and I drop him off first at his junior high school, next I go to school. On Mondays and Wednesdays I go to history class, then English class, and to end the day creative writing class. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I go to my college class, my journalism class, and  I end my day with mind numbing intellectual stimulus that I receive from my statistics class.  Last but not least on Fridays I have all of these classes for an hour each. I attend lunch right after my third period or fourth period depending on what day it is; I spend lunch with my friends. Then I attend my last class, and then I go back to my car. Depending on my appetite I may stop to get something to eat on my way home. As soon as I go home I get something to eat, watch the Tyra show, change my clothes, do my homework watch a  different world at six o clock to seven o clock.

sleep

When I sleep, I sleep hard and often times I feel as if I am not achieving the proper amount of sleep that I should. When I do not receive the proper amount of sleep this messes up my whole entire day.  When I arrive to school, knowing the fact that I did not get enough sleep, I lose all my abilities to focus in class I fail to actually attentively listen to my teacher, and I may fall asleep in class. Also I can be extremely cranky when I do not receive the proper amount of sleep; it is hard to ask someone who has not had enough sleep to complete a big task because they were insufficiently prepared for a full day. The only thing I think about when I have not received enough sleep is when can I of back to sleep, where can I go back to sleep, and what time should I go to seep in order to feel energized?
Who say bedtimes are only for children, I believe that everyone should create their cut off point, when it comes to the nightlife. If you push yourself to far in order to seem cool, while staying up late, in the morning you may feel regretful. I know my personal set curfew is eleven o clock because if I stay up past eleven o clock I will be exhausted, drowsy, cranky, and extremely irritable. However my bedtime all depends on how early in the morning I have to wake up the next day.

70s

I have always admired the free and beautiful essence of the seventies. If I had to choose to live in any decade, I would always choose the seventies. Although the seventies are known for drugs and wild hippies, the seventies were a time of love, inspiration, and art. The seventies to me represents a free and beautiful soul. I also loved the music during the seventies, rock legend, Jimi Hendrix had a booming career during the seventies. I am sure the seventies had its flaws however it seems as if the seventies was a time that was full of love depending on where you lived. I love the seventies, hippie style with the long feather necklace, and earring, the flat sandals, the crochet vest, ripped holey rocker jeans, bleached jeans and faded shirts. The seventies style is at mix between flower power and relaxation. I also admire the eighties because it was so colorful and inventive. I love the eighties style also, because it is so colorful and carefree. Although I love both of these decades I would never want to live in any decade beside the one I am living in now. I love our present culture its fun, inventive, technologically advanced, and open to new thing (well some of us are). I believe that people who were born in the two thousands are usually very inventive, competitive and creative. You somewhat have to be competitive and creative to survive in this day and age because the competition is stronger and harder.

out of state

I have the greatest desire to step beyond my comfort zones, and venture out toward the vast horizons entering a land of feeling uncomfortable. It is for this reason that I want to attend a college out of state, however there are several things I need to get accomplished before I leave. First I have to get my immunization records and send them to my desired out of state school. Next I have to pack , and because I want to go to the east coast I have to create a whole new wardrobe. I have to buy a heavy and warm coat for the brutal winters, boots for the long slushy walks from my last class to my dorm, I will need thermo shirts to wear underneath my regular shirts and for bedtime, hats, mittens, thick tube socks, house slippers and scarves. I will also need to buy my own set of towels, washcloths, a new toothbrush (just for the heck of it) and, my own set of basic dishes (cups, plates, forks, knives, and spoons). However I will also need regular school supplies to start my new year, in a new state, in a new school, such as pencils, pens, college rule paper, regular computer paper, printer(for the long nights I will be up printing my paper)binders, notebooks, protractor, compass, and most importantly organizer to keep track of all of my assignments and social planning. I also think along with the tangible items that are necessary I believe that I have to bring the intangible being a positive attitude, a wiling attitude to meet new friends and join new clubs.

weather

I believe the weather has everything to do with a person’s daily attitude. The weather itself is simply the universes attitude toward the day when it is awaken by the suns beauty and grace. So I believe that the weather has a lot to do with our outlook and attitude throughout the rest of the day.  When it is hot and humid I believe this makes people very irritable, cranky, and people I believe don not make the best decision when it is hot, they make rash and illogical decisions. When it is just right people tend to be more positive, not so irritable, and make better decisions because they are in a content and satisfied state of mind . However when it rains people seem to self reflect more and also become somewhat sad. I, for one hate when it is hot, humid, and without a breeze. I am the kind of person that becomes irritable and actually somewhat angry when the weather is that treacherous. When it is raining, thundering and even lightening I actually am happier and I feel as if my mind is clear. I love the rain because of the beautiful noise it makes when it bounces off my windows, and when it rains it makes me want to sit in my room peacefully and pull out my sketch pad. Whenever it rains I feel the most creative boost of energy and inspiration so when it rains is when I most often paint or draw.

brownies

My favorite desert is milk chocolate fudge brownies with milk chocolate chips. I would love to collaborate my love for milk chocolate fudge brownies with milk chocolate chip with cheesecake delight able slices. I would love for these two beautiful, mouthwatering, creamy, and rich deserts to become one. I would create milk chocolate fudge brownies with milk chocolate chips with cheesecake swirls. The heaven sent desert would be full of rich milk chocolate chips in each bite that the person took. The desert would be extremely rich in texture and creamy. I believe this would be somewhat hard to make only because you are dealing with two different types of deserts cheesecake, and milk chocolate fudge brownies, you have to make these two deserts perfectly if not when you combine the two the taste may be different.
However even though this may be somewhat difficult to create I think I could because it is something I truly want and desire. Although I believe I am a fantastic and well skilled chef I would prefer a real chef create my vision of this desert prodigy. I believe that a true chef could not only make this desert taste creamy and rich in flavor as I had imagined it but I believe that they could also make it look beautiful. I would think a chef would have the milk chocolate fudge brownies with milk chocolate chip with the cheesecake falling over the brownie in heavenly swirls beginning from the middle spreading to the edges of the brownie.

my favorite teacher

It’s not easy being a teacher. As a teacher you must know your student, what they’re learning methods are, and their true aspirations. As a teacher, you must demonstrate your passion, and allow your student to understand that you enjoy teaching them. Also as a teacher you must teach your student that the sky is the limit. My oldest brother has taught me all of the above. A teacher and an older brother share the same responsibilities.
My older brother, has taught me life’s most important lessons. He’s taught me to speak my mind, and most importantly that I can be anything in the world, there is no such word as “limit” when dealing with your future goals. He is my greatest influence. When I get sad, or discouraged he reminds me that I’m not the only person who feels defeated at times. He has taught me that you can feel discouraged, but never wallow in self-pity. A college search is supposed to be exciting, heartfelt, and heartbreaking? I searched for colleges based on their SAT or ACT score requirements, and if they offered my major. At times it would discourage me to find that my score did not match a certain colleges SAT or ACT requirements. My older brother gave me a light while I was traveling down my dark tunnel of finding my “perfect college”. I remember my brother’s words of encouragement, he told me “scores matter, but they’re not the only thing that an admissions board will look at. Colleges want a well-rounded person not someone who just tests well or who has a 4.0 GPA.” When he told me this I began to approach a new direction in searching for my “perfect college”. I realized that I could get accepted into any school as long as I put all my heart and effort into it. My older brother has continuously guided me to the answer, to all of my questions in a subtle way. He would never give me the full answer; he would simply show me how to find the answer on my own. It’s not easy being a teacher, but my older brother does a great job at balancing being a great teacher, mentor and best friend.

dressing the part

I feel most comfortable when I dress informally. I despise dressing formally because I fail to comprehend why I need to dress up as something that I am not simply to please insignificant people. I believe that if someone does not except me in my jeans-shirt, and chucks then they do not deserve to be my friend. However the only time I will dress formally is if I am going on an interview for a job, or even a college. However I always wear my selection of jewelry because this simply adds my personality in it. Although jobs and colleges want to see the professional side of you I always believe that they are human enough to appreciate and even admire a hint of your personality. People who dress formally for every occasion such as church, I believe they are somewhat superficial and treat life as if it were a fashion show. Life is not about who has on the newest designer jeans or who has the most expensive purse, so why treat life as if it is your debut as the newest fashion icon or prodigy. I believe that dressing formally is not required for every occasion, I believe it is only required for the work place, and college interviews. I feel that when people dress in their informal clothes such as jeans and a shirt, they are themselves, they possess the freedom to be who they are and who they have always been, however as soon as they slip on a suit, or a dress and heels they transform into what society wants them to be.

cats and dogs

I am the owner of two dogs, and I truly love dogs more than cats. Although I am allergic to cats, even if I were not allergic to them I still would not want them as a pet. I believe that dogs are better than cats because dogs love easily as long as you treat them right and you feed them they will continue to be loyal to you. However cats on the other hand scratch and bite for no reason and cats are sneaky and vicious.  When cats feel threatened and attack they lock on to a person’s face, leg or even back, and they dig their unforgiving claws into their victims innocent flesh and do not release until they feel like it. however when dogs feel threatened they give a warning through a alerting growl, but if their victim does not take the unwanted hint, the dog will bite but that’s as far as most dogs go, and you have to do a lot to make a dog angry unless he was raised to be a watch dog. Dogs love easily and they love for a long time, where as a cat only loves their owner until their owner has earned their cats trust. I also believe that cats are not suitable for young children because children like to play around and when cats do not want to play they can become somewhat moody, however when a dog does not want to play he or she is still in a good mood, and at least will still allow the children to play with his ears and rub his welcoming and heartwarming belly.

shopping

It is not easy to resist temptation, especially when it has your name written all over it and is on sale. However, what most shopaholic do not realize is that they should not buy something based on illogical facts. When contemplating on purchasing something especially something pricey they should consider do they REALLY want it, is it really worth that much, could I get it for cheaper, am I in love with it?
I, for one, love shopping but in order to continue shopping there I must create my own personal budget. Impulse shoppers risk their financial stability when they pick anything up and purchases based off of the color. For impulse shoppers I would suggest that they create a budget and stick to it.  It’s a wonderful feeling when you can buy anything because of your financial status, however this doesn’t mean you actually have to buy anything and everything. When you go shopping g you should have a set item or items that you are going to buy, and when you arrive in a store and notice the most drop dead gorgeous top put it back.
Put the top right back on the hanger you ripped it off of, explore your options as an impulse shopper this is the ultimate rule and way to rid yourself of your treacherous habits.  You should never enter a store and buy the first thing you see that you somewhat  like, and you have to purchase the item that you know you will always wear.

i love winter

I was born during the month of July, and most people would think, because of this my favorite season is summer. However, my favorite season is winter. I am a summer baby who hates, and has always hated the summer time.
I cherish the summer vacations that I have continuously received being a student in school, I love the melting ice cream cones that go on sale during the summer time, and I appreciated the beautiful breeze that occasionally breaks the humid air. But there is something about the winter time that will always capture my heart. The cold air that hits my face and the unpredictable weather that is never appreciated until the hot humid summer begin. During the winter time you can wear layers, and layers of clothes in order to achieve your ideal body temperature, however during the summer time you can sit in your bare skin, and most likely you will still be affected by the still heat that lurks beyond your front door. There are numerous of activities that you can enjoy during the winter time, depending on where you live. If you reside in an area in which you experience the snow, you can go sledding, classically build a snow man, create the everlasting snow angles that your child-like mind will never forget, glide and engrave your name on the smooth surface of an ice skating rink, and admire the graceful way a snowflake drops on the ground.
Nonetheless, if you reside in an area in which you do not experience snow, you can dance in the rain like the actors carelessly do on the movie screens, take pictures of the incoming midnight thunder clouds, fall asleep listening to the harmonic music the rain creates bouncing off of your window, and you can embrace the simplicity of the cold air as it caress the side of your face.

take the test

Taking test can be extremely stressful, especially test that truly affect your future. The most important thing to remember when taking a test is not to panic. We as seniors in high school are required to take, and pass a college admissions test.
Preparing yourself to take this test can be just as stressful as taking the actual test. The common misconception about taking test such as the college admission test, is that you do not have to study for it. There is no test that you do not have to study for, or properly prepare yourself for. With this wise knowledge, you also have to get a good nights rest the night before the big test. Students take this rule for granted. Without a good nights rest students have a higher chance, in dosing off during the test, or not fully paying attention, or even not being alert during the test, rather than a student who actually got a good nights sleep. I, for one, become extremely nervous when taking test; however I always take in three deep breaths before I take any test, simply to relax my nerves. When you take any test you have to believe that you are going to do well, and that you will do your best, if you enter the testing room with a bad perspective on how your test will go, you most likely will not do as good as you could on the test.
Last but not least eating a healthy, but filling meal before taking your test is always recommended. When you eat a healthy, and well balanced meal, you are supplied with the energy that is required to complete your test successfully.

computer

Technology has truly shaped our America. Its influence has tremendously increased within the years. Technology has given Americans an easier life. Without the expansion and increase of technology where would we be as people? Would we be better off or would we be worse without the invention of the computer.
The computer, most likely is the best invention that has made life easy for Americans, however is “easy” actually better and more beneficial? The computer has allowed not only Americans, but people who posses a computer to have an unlimited source of education through the internet. Without the computer, we wouldn’t have the unlimited access to knowledge that we do now. Although not having computers would eliminate the easy access to knowledge, it would also be beneficial. Life would be different without the computer, because we would have to either call our friends or send them a letter rather than log on to Facebook, or aim to communicate with them, and we would have to read the newspaper to find out what the weather would be like, or what news events have recently occurred. Although not having computers would eliminate the easy access to knowledge or communication, it would also be beneficial. Eliminating computers would be beneficial, because this would challenge people to go after knowledge on their own, and not rely on the computer as much. This is possibly what America needs, maybe we need to eliminate everything that gives us somewhat of a shortcut to the access of communication or knowledge and except a challenge.

driving

People fail to realize the dangers that lurk out on the rocky road while driving. People believe that driving is simple and for some it may be, but being a safe and well driver takes time and experience.
The new laws that have been passed in California have not only made the roads safer, but also have improved the driving skills for the drivers. I believe several car accidents were, because of talking on the phone, or texting. Everyone believes that they are superman or superwoman and have the ability to do one thousand things while driving. However it is not safe to multi task on the road, because you are not only responsible for your own life, but also people who are sharing the road with you. I believe good drivers do not talk on the phone, or text while driving. It is easy to get in a car accident when you are focused on what your best friend has just said, or what your friend has recently sent you in a picture message. Also driving the speed limit is important because f you drive too slow or too fast you are endangering not only yourself but others.
I am a new driver and I know that the roads can be dangerous, so when I drive I pay attention to the road and nothing else. I keep my hand at ten and two, just as the taught me in my driving classes. It is easy to get side tracked but if you pay attention to the road, and stay alert about what is going on around you, you will not run into any cars, or pedestrians.

pride

If you do not have pride for your work, then what do you have? Attaining pride in your work, and everything that you do reflects on the type of person you are on the inside. If you have no pride in your work, and you are not proud of the work you have created, this means you did not put your all into it, and you simply put it together in five minutes.
Whenever I create or submit an assignment, I know that I tried my best, and that is all I can do. However when I create or submit an assignment and I have the feeling that I could have tried harder, or did better, I feel bad and I carry that sorrowful attitude with me through  the rest of the day. Trying your best reflects who you are, because if you try your best you naturally have a better attitude than someone who did not try their best. I believe this because when you do not try your best you feel bad, so often times you may push those bad emotions on someone who you care about.
What are you about if you are not able to boast about the work you have created, or have pride in it? You should always do your best and have pride in your work, because you never know who is watching you or who might actually appreciate your work.

diversity

Diversity is an imperative factor for life and growth. I believe diversity is important, because without diversity we as people would not learn anything new nor would we be able to grow and expand beyond our horizons. Diversity means to have variety, meaning to attain things, and people from a different cultural background, different area, and who have different personalities.
Having diversity is not only important to have in order to learn more, but also having diversity, keeps life from becoming bored. If you have a school full of the same exact people you would not achieve anything because they all think and act in the same fashion. You would not be able to have an input of different ideas, as to how to raise money for the school, or what extracurricular activities to participate in.
I, for one, have the deepest desire to attend a diverse college because I want to be challenged with a diverse set of minds. I don’t want to attend a college where everyone has the same beliefs and values as me. Diversity will only lead people to something more positive, because although we as people may believe that we attain a certain amount of knowledge about people and the different backgrounds they come from. We actually don’t know too much of anything until we have fully submerges ourselves in the different backgrounds, different areas, and surrounded ourselves with people who have different personalities. People who are not open to diversity, I believe are not open to new things, and are somewhat fearful of change.

Cooperation

Cooperation by definition is the act of working or acting together to achieve a common goal (taken from the Encarta dictionary online, 2009). I believe cooperation simply means to carry a positive attitude when you’re working with someone.
Cooperation is important because without cooperation I do not believe any work would get done. If I did not cooperate with my teachers I would not learn or comprehend every bit of information that was being taught. I also believe that when you cooperate with someone you not only have to carry a positive attitude, but you also have to be open to change, and possibly be prepared for compromising. When we enter the work force we will be working with people from different backgrounds, and coming from different cultural backgrounds also. I believe here is where the most conflict comes about, however if you are skilled in the art of cooperation you will not have a problem with understanding your opponents background and this will help you come to an agreement with them when your in an argument.
Understanding how to step back and listen to the other person is important because sometimes in the heat of an argument you may not hear what your opponent is saying so you may say something you might regret. If you cooperate and listen to their side of the story you will understand how to debate them more effectively.  People who understand the true meaning of cooperation, and understand how to cooperate with people, are more successful in life.

communication

As we age we begin to watch life evolve, watch its growth and the way it swiftly changes right before our eyes. Technology and communication are both like a bottle of wine, they get better, and improve within years. Several aspects of life have changed since 1990. We, as people have become more technologically advanced, and now have more opportunities to communicate in different ways. Certain skills we have attained since the 90’s, are still used today, and some have been improved, but no matter what the communicational outlet, or technological advancement, we as people will consistently try to improve it.
During the 90’s, the newest communicational system was with the smaller more portable cellular phones. They were now finally able to fit in ones pocket. Never in a million years did people think that some day they might actually be able to have voice command on their phone. People probably never even predicted that they would be able to communicate with their family and friends on the computer through websites such as MySpace, or Facebook. MySpace has allowed not only teenagers, but people of all ages communicate with their friends and family. Facebook allows people to communicate with their family and friends as well, but people also get to play games such as Farmville, or sorority life. Last but not least the most recent form of communication is Twitter. Twitter allows people to communicate with their friends or family, and allow friends to know what they are doing at that very moment.

Time

If you’re on time you’re late; if you’re early you’re on time
My grandma and my father both view time as a precious aspect of life,
If you waste my grandmas or fathers time the tension becomes so thick you can cut it with a knife
They see the beauty of time, my grandmother hates being late, and hates when people run late
My father works and plans around his personal clock
He is always on time and the race between him and time never stops
My grandma works, and plans around her personal clock
Only she posses the key to this intangible aspect of life’s lock
The time we spend as people, is often times wasted
Wasted on anger, and stressful contemplation
We need to value the importance of time,
Embrace time and its ability to run fast and slip through the cracks of our intertwined fingers
We often lose time when we debate over how to spend our time; we allow our time to carelessly linger
My grandmother understands that time comes and goes; she spends every moment doing something important and enjoyable
My father and grandmas habit of being on time has always been loyal
Being on time isn’t easy for everybody
People make up the best excuses for why they were late
And why they allowed, their or another person’s time to go to waste
But everyone, I believe understand that time is a terrible thing to misuse
But only my grandmother and father understand, and value the and beauty that time posses

allowance

I believe children from eleven to seventeen should receive an allowance. Receiving an allowance teaches children of all ages to become financially responsible. Receiving an allowance also  teaches children at young age, how to save their money for the things that they really want. Although children are still receiving money from their parents, when the money is placed in the child’s hand, a certain sense of real independence is achieved. Children will receive the sense that they are actually working at a real job when they are compensated.
Receiving an allowance is an imperative factor for becoming well acquainted with life’s most important factor, independence. Not all children receive an allowance, however I believe in order to understand how to deal with money you must be exposed to it at an early age. Unfortunately I believe several parents give children an allowance simply for the fact of them having money in their pocket to spend. Receiving allowances should be earned through manual labor. Children should be assigned a chore list, and should receive an allowance. Most children are assigned chores such as, washing the dishes, drying the dishes, cleaning their room, mopping the floors, vacuuming the floors, feeding the dogs, cleaning the kitchen counters, and cleaning the stove. There are several different ways of earning money for the chores assigned to children. However how much money should a child receive for doing chores? I believe it depends on how many chores the child is carrying, and also how old they are. Younger children should not be paid as much as older children, because they don’t necessarily know what to do with ten or twenty dollars, or they may spend all their money on one item. If the child is performing only one chore I believe they only deserve five dollars. If a child is performing two chores weekly they should receive ten dollars. Last but not least if a child is performing three or more chores they should receive twenty dollars. I believe that children who do not perform chores should not receive any type of allowance. Although this does teach a child to be responsible, if they do not have to work for the money then they will take advantage of the money. Either way, if a child receives an allowance they are being taught to be money wise, and financially responsible.
I have been receiving an allowance since I was in the fifth grade. I started off simply be wiping down the counters, and I was paid three dollars. When I was younger three dollars was a lot, however as I grew older, I took on more chores, and began earning more money. When I was in seventh grade I unloaded the dishwasher while my older brother loaded the dishwasher, and I was paid ten dollars. Last but not least when I began high school, I was use to unloading and loading the dishwasher, however instead of earning more money, I continued to receive the ten dollars, that I was earning when I was only unloading the dishwasher. Earning an allowance has taught me to not only be financially responsible, but has also made me more aware, and selective when it comes to purchasing my desired items.

save our world

                                                                Save our world
You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give-Khalil Gibran”.It is simple to donate clothes or unwanted toys, however when you give back your time, you are giving something much more than the tangible, you are affecting the world.
I believe that giving back is the best gift you can give to the world, and it is already unwrapped. When you participate in environmental activities such as planting trees, cleaning beaches, or consistently recycling, you may not believe you are truly making your mark on the world, or helping out, but you are contributing to making the world a better place.  The world is better when it is cleaner, do we as people honestly want to ruin our future world? Do we in the future want to pay for the mistakes that we are making right now, by trashing our world? Even though we sometimes we feel we are simply throwing down a tiny piece of bubble gum wrapper, or throwing the plastic bottle into the wrong trash can, we fail to realize that we are contributing to destroying our only world. Unfortunately the uneducated, and ignorant have no sympathy for the destruction of our world, we are slowly watching our world disintegrate, but who will stop it, does anyone have the heart, and courage to stop this destruction?
Recycling is extremely simple; however you must be aware, and conscious about how to recycle properly. In most cases the city will distribute three different colored trash cans to people so they understand, and are being encouraged to recycle properly. The first trash can is black, which is specifically for non recyclable items, such as food, makeup, or, Styrofoam. People will also receive a green trash can which is for throwing away grass, wood, and other easily degradable waste.  Last but not least, people will receive a blue trash can which is meant for recyclable trash, such as jewelry, pop cans(metal) , plastic bottles(plastic) and light bulbs(glass). Making sure you are throwing away your trash in the correct trash can is the first step to improving our world.
When someone gives a gift such as improving the environment, they shouldn’t expect to receive a tangible gift in return. The people that give back, and actually contribute to improving the world are receiving a gift much bigger than money, a new car, or a new house. They receive the satisfaction of knowing that they made a difference, whether it was big or small, they affected the world. Giving back is a gift within a gift, you receive a gift after you have given back to your community, and giving back is a gift for the world. Participating in environmental activities, builds character, and gives participants a humble attitude. On several occasions I have sacrificed a good night’s sleep, and a free weekend in exchange for giving back, and participating in a community service project. I give back, not only for the intangible gifts that I receive after I have given back, but I believe our world is what we make it. If we want a toxic and unlivable world, then we should continue with the efforts we are putting in right now to improve our world, which is not much. However if we want a safe, and clean world, then we should take action now, and begin to give back, and sacrifice our time to help improve our world.

fame and fortune

Is it easy to become famous? With the use of technology it is becoming easier for people to become famous, or to become noticed in the media. However all though becoming famous is simple, it is easy to lose yourself in the midst of the “red carpet scene”. People who become famous must know that they are entering an entirely different world, full of fame, fortune, artificial people, and also corruptness.
Decades ago it would take only the most talented, and elite to become accepted into the celebrity scene, and become admired as an icon. However, now technology has exposed that anyone can become famous. Several people of any age have the ability to upload videos of them demonstrating their talent, such as singing, dancing, or performing a skit onto the computer. The most popular site to upload videos is YouTube. People also have the option to sign themselves up to appear on a reality television show such as “ American Idol”, “Dances with the Stars”, “Real World” and more. Also people can appear on talk shows such as “Tyra”, “Maury”, “Jerry Springer” and more. Appearing on either a talk show or even a reality television show, will sometimes lead someone to minor fame and fortune, and they may not become a famous celebrity but they will become well known.
With fame and fortune, a person’s life can change drastically. When people become famous they sometimes fail to realize that they are trading a reasonable and comfortable life, for a hectic and public life. Celebrities have all the money in the world, but have no privacy. Celebrities also, are desired by their opposite sex consistently, but always seem to have the hardest time finding someone to truly share their fame and fortune with. Life becomes harder when you live in front of millions of people, who are watching your every move. Also when one becomes a celebrities he or she must take on several responsibilities, they have to understand how to manage their money to prevent themselves from going bankrupt, and they must understand what to say, and what not to say to the media. It is not that hard to become famous, but to stay famous, and have the mental stability to understand how to control your fame, while staying humble and true to yourself is not easy.

the three bestfriends

I use to be able to analyze and dissect someone’s outer appearance perfectly; at least that’s what I thought. This negative aspect of being human is somewhat unavoidable. People have a habit of “judging a book by its cover”. People always feel that they know, and understand who someone is by the way they stand, the way they dress, and the way they look, when in fact they know nothing about the person, but why do people do this?
When I was in seventh grade I had already established who my best friend was. I knew that I would never replace her, or add anyone else into our circle of friendship that only I and she understood. However I didn’t know that my best friend had another close friend, however this “other girl” didn’t have the same title as me being the “best friend”. My best friend introduced me to this “other girl” and once I laid eyes on her I knew for a fact me, and her would never be friends. I walked cautiously up to her, because I had already “caught a vibe” from her, I felt as if she was negative, and completely stuck up. The way she stood, allowed me to continue with my judgmental analysis of her. She stood up as tall as a tree, with perfect posture, giving me a feeling that she was self centered, and arrogant. When she opened her mouth, she said “hi, my names Khayla”, her tone was full of a rotten attitude, and she gave me the feeling that she had already prejudged me as well.
Eventually the air between, Khayla, Ashley and myself, grew with awkwardness, and tension. Khayla continued to talk, but it seemed to be a forced conversation only to occupy the awkwardness of the atmosphere that we created. After this awful encounter with this stuck up girl, I continued to build my friendship with Ashley, and avoid Khayla. Unfortunately fate brought us back together in honors algebra I class that following year. This was our first year being in honors classes, I didn’t know anyone else besides her, and she didn’t know anyone also. I didn’t want to sit next to her; however there were no more available seats other than the one beside her. Eventually comparing our schedules led us to realize we had several classes in common. In each class we stuck by each other’s side, and began to surpass the small talk, and actually began having lengthy conversations with each other. She wasn’t as bad as I thought, she was much like myself, a nice sense of humor and really down-to-earth. Ashley, Khayla, and I began to hang out with each other more and more, and the circle of friendship that was exclusive to only Ashley and I expanded allowing one more person in.
It is unbelievable that Khayla and I became best friends, because we both judged each other, simply from the way each other looked. Judging Khayla led me to do a lot of self reflection. I began to realize that I could not tell who someone was if I didn’t get to know them. One cannot tell another person’s personality, or style through the façade that they hold up throughout the day. I promised myself, from that day forward, that I would never judge someone as far as not giving them a chance to become my friend.

reading

In the midst of my disappointment I closed my eyes and attempted to wish the pain away. The feeling of wanting to release the tears that I tried so hard to hold back, were soon about to rush rapidly through my brown eyelids. I couldn’t hold it back any longer, the hard lump of pain that I tried so hard to swallow would not disappear, I let out a loud gasp, and a waterfall of tears soon flew out of my eyes. I realized at that moment I could not hold onto the pain any longer I had to solve this dilemma that I was facing. Learning to read is hard for several people, however I was nine years old, and felt as if I was running out of time. My learning clock was ticking, and if I wanted to make it in time, in order to reach my goal in being placed in honors classes, I knew I would have to do better than what I was doing.
It seemed as if not being able to read had been a problem that had just popped up in my life. I was wonderful at reading when I was in first grade, but once I approached my fourth year in school, I was beginning to fall behind. I was soon placed in a special reading program, which to me only seemed  embarrassing. Our small group of four to six kids, met once every two days, and worked side by side with an instructor. The instructor took us to the school’s library, and we were allowed to pick a book of our choice. My instructor helped me comprehend each word from cover to cover of every book I laid hands on.
It was on a certain day that taught me, what to truly do with my feelings of disappointment. It started out as an ordinary day in fourth grade, I expressed to my classmates, and friends who were already in honors classes, about my passion, and desire to become enrolled in the honor classes as well. To my surprise they were less than supportive, and most of the children told me that I would not be able to get accepted into the honors classes, because of “I wasn’t smart enough”. I carried their negative words by my side throughout the rest of the day. When I arrived home, I began to think about how far I was coming along in my reading group. I knew that if I truly wanted to take honors classes, I would have to put the time and dedication in enhancing my reading skills. It was in that moment of realization that my possibility of entering into the honors classes seemed higher. Despite what the other kids said, I turned the feeling of disappointment and self defeat into motivation and determination. My fifth grade year approached, and unfortunately I wasn’t accepted into the honors classes, however my reading was much better, and being told that I wasn’t smart enough to achieve my desired goal,  simply created intrinsic motivation for myself.

doctors and athletes

The inspirational lives that athletes live, is put on a pedestal higher than what it actually deserves. Several people who uphold jobs such as doctors, lawyers, and police officers feel that athletes receive too high of a  compensation. Although athletes are not saving lives necessarily or fighting justice they are providing people with entertainment. They are providing them with hope. Athletes are the tangible proof that anyone can achieve the American dream, and that it isn’t simply an intangible fantasy that Americans created some odd years ago. However athletes are inspirational but do they deserve a higher compensation than a teacher, doctor, or lawyer?
When one becomes an athlete they are sacrificing a lot, quality time with their family , a stable love life, and also their privacy. However this is their choice. When an athlete cheats on his or her spouse, or has a child by another man or woman other than their own spouse, they are stripped of their dignity that they worked so hard toward earning. However we as people put our doctors on a pedestals, we believe they are living a life that we should strive to live also. People need to realize, they do not comprehend what goes on behind closed doors, and they do not understand what goes on in their doctor’s lives, after their white coat comes off at the end of the day. The burden of responsibility that an athlete carries is not as heavy as the burden a doctor, lawyer or even firefighter carries. A doctor is saving someone’s life, a lawyer is defending someone’s life and fire fighters are risking their lives.
Athletes are role models even if they do not wish to be. I believe athletes often times earn a bad reputation, due to the fact that they live their lives in front of the public eye. Being an athlete is a passion driven career. You must be mentally and spiritually strong in order to live the life of an athlete.  As an athlete you must live an almost perfect life, because the public and media, are all anticipating the moment in which an athlete will “slip”. Being an athlete is a riskier career decision. Although I am not understating the obstacles that doctors, must overcome in order to earn that title as “Dr. “ I believe if someone has the passion to become a doctor, lawyer, or police officer, they can channel this passion over into a institution of higher learning such as, medical school, law school, and the police academy. Unfortunately there is not an athlete academy, or athlete training school. There is no transition from being an average Joe into becoming a well known icon. Several children dream of becoming an athlete, but only a small number of children will actually achieve this dream. When children dream of becoming doctors, or lawyers their chances of reaching this goal is higher than becoming an athlete.  In medical school they can teach a student how to become a better doctor, by teaching them to be more in touch with their patients needs, but a coach can only teach an athlete so much, the rest of his or her success is all dependent on natural talent.
Athletes, doctors, lawyers, and firefighters all, live stressful and inspirational lives. In my opinion they all deserve the same amount of compensation. I would compare doctors and lawyers field of work, to people who work behind the scenes of a big play toward its opening night. Whereas athletes are the actors. Doctors, lawyers and athletes all take a small role in affecting someone’s life, so shouldn’t they receive the same amount compensation?

uniform

The easiest way to express your personality and true spirit is through clothing.  Who has the right to tell anyone to cover their personality, or true spirit up? A uniform is a way to make a student feel just like everyone else, it takes away from their individuality. However although a uniform takes away from self expression, it has its advantages.
It is a popular aspect to private schools, that wearing a uniform is mandatory. However this is what sets them apart from public schools. I am against wearing a uniform in public school. I’ve had the opportunity to attend both a public, and private school. I felt happiest when I was able to express myself freely, and not having to worry about looking like everyone else. I understand that when attending school, no student should focus on the way they look. However when you feel good, you carry a positive attitude, which makes you open to wanting to learn more. When someone feels healthy, and happy inside, the happiness that is achieved through freely expressing one self, will become bluntly obvious to those surrounding them. When I dressed the way I felt inside, I enjoyed school a lot more. Also when students are allowed to dress the way they wish, the environment is more carefree, and not so uptight.
When I attended private school. It was mandatory that the students wore uniforms. Although the school still allowed students to have a free dress day on Friday, with restrictions of course. The environment was somewhat uptight, and overly strict. The restrictions were overbearing, they didn’t allow us to wear shirts with logos on it, and girls were not allowed to have painted nails, unless it was a neutral color. I am completely against wearing uniforms in school, however wearing a uniform has its advantages. The advantages to wearing a uniform is that students don’t have to contemplate what they are going to wear in the morning. Also students who wear uniforms do not have worry about buying new clothes, or searching for clothes that are “in”. Although wearing a uniform has its advantages, it still limits students to fully expressing themselves, and truly discovering their personal style.
School is a place where young students are suppose to, not only be educated, but experience a mature growth within, they are suppose to develop, and discover who they truly are. If they are not given the opportunity to express who they truly are on the outside, how will they understand how to deal with what is going on, on the inside? I understand that teachers do not want students to be overly exposed. Most schools that do not force students to wear uniforms have restrictions. The most common restrictions for students who attend public school is no spaghetti straps, no open toe shoes, and no white tees. Although not every student will agree with the dress code, it is better than wearing a uniform. A dress code does limit a certain

poems

The soul runs freely throughout the world.
Covered in nothing, but our true colors.
Eventually finding its home again.

Envy clings onto the backdoor.
Buried in its own misery and covered in its dirty green coat.
Searching throughout the world for someone to hold onto.

Fate awaits its signal to run at its owner’s front door.
Bare within its own outline.
It chooses the path, and life you will live.

Time fly’s in and out of my life.
While I wear a blindfold, blind to its beauty.
Uncover my eyes and let me discover the true power of controlling my time.

A  voice is seen and not heard in a empty room.
Covered in a vivid combination of letters.
Silence takes over this voice, killing its chance of being heard.

A light illuminates the room.
It wears a bright robe walking in any room of its choice, commanding attention.
The light leaves a room leaving people, craving for its presence once more.

swine flu

It seems as if, every year America informs common citizens about a new disease that has tragically killed thousands of people. Americans rushed out to hospitals, complaining to doctors, and nurses about, what most thought were just common flu symptoms. Unfortunately, unlike the common flu, this new flu was becoming the death of several people. This unknown virus, was known as the Swine Flu. Quickly, doctors began to produce a vaccine protecting people from getting the swine flu, also known as the H1N1 virus.
The swine flu rapidly swept across America killing several men, women, and children, in 2009. What is the swine flu exactly? The Swine Flu simply is a higher level, and more deadly version of the ordinary flu. When the weather becomes unpredictable people are more prone to catching the common cold, such as when the weather moves drastically from, hot weather to cold weather, or vice versa. People believe that because the weather is somewhat more stable then what it used to be, they will not catch the Swine Flu, however if they are even in the same room with someone who may have it still, they can catch it. Although Swine Flu is not airborne if someone carrying this virus, coughs, or sneezes, the people around them could possibly catch Swine Flu.
To prevent yourself from getting Swine Flu, you can make sure you dress appropriately for the weather. If it is cold outside, don’t wear anything showing too much skin, make sure you have a scarf and if it is really cold wear two pairs of socks. Dressing appropriately for the weather will be worth it when winter time rolls by.

smoking

Is smoking cigarettes” cool”? Smoking cigarettes is not “cool”, smoking is deadly. So why do so several teenagers smoke cigarettes? The common misconception about smoking, is that it makes the user look cool. What is cool? Is being cool, following behind your friends buying a pack of cigarettes only to eventually find out you have lung, breast, or oral cancer.
Smoking is not the thing to do, it is extremely hazardous, and not only causes cancer but it makes the user loose a lot of weight. When someone picks up their first cigarette, he or she may think, its only one, or it is completely harmless. However smoking cigarettes can be extremely addictive. Someone may think that they are only smoking one, but sometimes that one cigarette can turn into two, three or even four cigarettes a day.  Several young people smoke, because it gives them a sense of “fitting in”. Whether it be curiosity, or influence no one should smoke, let alone when they are a teenager. It is worst to smoke when you are young, because when you are young, you are still developing physically and mentally.
The wonderful feeling or sensation that is achieved when one smokes, is not worth a lifetime of regret. Often times teenagers smoke, because it relieves stress, and makes them calm. However there are other ways of feeling calm, or peaceful, you can draw listen to music or even paint. The creative and relaxing outlets dealing with relieving stress is unlimited, but no one should ever smoke cigarettes in search of a release or escape.

math

Without math where would we be? Math is important, and we use it on a daily basis, whether we use it while we’re out at the mall calculating our total cost for the new outfit we have been dying to purchase, or ordinary but necessary groceries. Unfortunately mathematics is taken for granted, several people feel that math is not necessary, or they feel that math isn’t necessary after they have learned how to add, subtract, divide, and multiply. This common misconceptions, is rudely proven incorrect when someone decides to dine out to a fancy restaurant, and they aren’t sure how much of a tip their waitress is suppose to receive.
Regardless of someone’s career choice mathematics is necessary. Math is also the most avoided subject, possibly due to the fact that math is somewhat difficult to most, or because within a moment math can go from being simple to challenging.  People should attempt to realize the beauty, and significance of mathematics. Math is difficult; however math is most likely the only subject that you will only find one answer to the equation or problem. The world that we live in would not be able to survive let alone function properly without math. We as people don’t realize how many times a day we actually use math. If mathematics would have not been discovered or taught to people we would not have houses, cars, medicine, or clothes. When an architect begins to build a house he or she must know simple measurements, and how much wood they need to build a house. A nurse must understand how much medicine a patient needs, if she didn’t know the correct amount of medicine the patient could possibly overdose. The importance of math walks through our world unnoticed, but consistently is used throughout our everyday lives, we must appreciate the power of math.

food

The food a person chooses to eat is dependent upon taste, smell, and sometimes texture. Everyone around the world has a distinct and personal favorite food. However, why are people more attached to certain foods.
People can become attached to certain foods, because it can remind them of a loved one, or simply fulfill a craving. On several different occasions, people select foods that are most familiar to them. Certain foods link people back to their childhood, or create a nostalgic feeling. Also some people prefer foods that are sweet, spicy, sour, or salty. Some foods are associated with the holidays such as turkey and honey baked hams on thanksgiving, candy canes on Christmas, chocolate covered strawberries on Valentine ’s Day, jawbreakers on Halloween, strawberry cake, with cream cheese icing on someone’s birthday.
Foods can also be selected for the nutritional value. If someone is on a diet they are more prone to choose foods that are low in sugar such as broccoli, cucumber, peas, and asparagus. Someone on a diet is not necessarily going to eat something such as, a donut, cheeseburger, supersized French fries, fried chicken, or pizza.   There are different reasons as to why people eat the foods they eat and why they eat the foods they eat. Most of the foods we eat, are either chosen for their nutritional value, dependent on a special day, or dependent on our mood. Whatever the situation may be, people choose the foods they want to eat. No one has control over the types of foods someone else eats.

Uncle Sam Wants You

“Democracy is by definition, the free and equal right of every person to participate in a system of government, often practiced by electing representatives of the people by the majority of the people” (Microsoft word, dictionary/ N.D.). Everyone in the United States should have the right to make their own decisions. The United States professes to allow the voices of the people to be heard, although this far too often does not occur.
It is not fair to require, or force someone to serve in the military. Not everyone posses the patriotic attitude towards their country, so why force them to fight for their country? America wears a façade that portrays how their government tends to the needs of their people. The imperative decision that Americans face when enlisting in the army should not be a decision that is forced, or made by the government. Being an American is suppose to secure our rights, and ability to fight for our pursuit of happiness, our freedom, and most of all, our freedom of speech. The government has no right to change what has already been set in stone; they have no right to overturn the first amendment by requiring Americans to serve in some form of military service branch. The decision must be voluntary. Why take away American citizens options? Why force someone to serve a year in the miltary? America cannot stand amongst other countries, and claim that they are a land of opportunities and options, if they require their citizens, to fight in a war that they may not feel is substantial. Several things can happen within that time period if enlisted in the army, he or she could be injured or even worse killed. A life changing decision such as, enlisting in the military for a whole year, should only be made by the person considering enlisting in the military. The government should not have a major voice in a life changing decision such as this.
Enlisting in the army is not an option for me. My obligated quest for the pursuit of happiness does not begin with enlisting in the military, but enrolling in college. It is astounding that if I lose my life, in the act of fighting in a war that is not my own, the government coincidently has enough money to pay for a proper funeral; however they don’t have enough money to pay for my education. Although the government will pay for my education, if I put my life in the middle of a war zone, and only then, is when I can receive my opportunity to enroll in college without any finical burdens.
The first amendment, upholds our right as American citizens to verbally express our opinions, even if they are against our beloved country. It is interesting that we live in a government built upon democracy yet we are constantly defending our rights to exercise this so called democracy.
